Here are some outtakes from a recent Orange Coast Magazine Shoot. The issue comes out in March, but I kinda just wanted to share these.

Anatomy Lesson
May 16

Picked up this anatomical cutaway from 20th Century Props this week.
He looks so tranquil.
Night Shooting
Apr 6
Went out shooting with Brendan Klein the other night for a class that we both have together.
We were looking for pieces of the road that could be seen as parts of human anatomy for a fake ad campaign selling a motorcycle.
But then I took this shot, which I really just like for the line color and composition.
Kind of reminds me of early analytical cubism, but without any of the symbolism.

Amazon Justice
Mar 30
Now, I’m not a Halo fanatic, but I do enjoy the game and the world it’s set in. But nothing garnered my attention more than the ad campaign devised by T.A.G. San Francisco.
I order the thing on Amazon and realize a month later that nothing showed up in the mail. I contact the seller, get a rushed excuse and don’t see anything for another week. Finally, the helmet shows up but without any of the actual content.
Thank you amazon.com for your swift judgment in my favor for a full refund of the purchase price. Now I have a trophy of my geekdom and an interesting product shot for the hell of it.

Shoot Details: Because of the large golden reflective surface of the helmet, I had to get a giant 4×8 piece of foam core and cut a hole in it for the lens to pop through. Even then it was a lot of retouching to get all the lines and seams out of the visor. Other than that, it was fairly simple, rim light and a softbox, with a background light for separation.

Derringer Cycles – Part 2
Mar 29
Remember that post not too long ago about Derringer Cycles?
I spoke with creator Adrian Van Anz and worked out a photo shoot with him.
Just finished that earlier today with some studio shots of the bike, studio portraits of him, and a quick on location environmental portrait.
Photos to follow soon.
High Design in the Outdoors
Feb 24
Here’s a couple of shots from a project I’m working on.
I took a trip to REI in Arcadia and perused the shelves for anything that looked remotely interesting to shoot, and instead, what I found were these amazing items which no longer looked like the function over form tools I remember from my scouting days, but had integrated high design into increased functionality and most importantly for backpackers, less weight.
I took these into the studio and did a day long shoot with all the items I picked.
Two of my favorites.

Look at the detail.

I have had that movie stuck in my head for the last couple weeks, so for an entertainment photo class project, I decided that I would try to recreate that feel and focus on capturing portraits of the actors but not necessarily the characters.

Worked with the awesome Samantha Baker as stylist who did an amazing job, and Mary Amor my colleague and on-the-spot assistant.
Actors: Gordon Stover and Ned Hepburn, definitely a pleasure to work with them.
Living is an Attitude
Feb 3
Hey if you say you want to go climb Everest in the morning and be back for afternoon tea, more power to you.
I shot an actress by the name of Lyla Wood as a go getter of a retiree dead set of going ice climbing, as long as she could wear her knit cap and scarf.

I still wish I would have used some sort of a map background instead of just a plain black seamless. Or even a colored seamless just to give it some pop.
