Photographing a Stem Cell Rock Star!

Dr. Hans Keirstead is a visionary, a rebel, and an all around nice guy.

Utilizing his talents to help cure everything from spinal cord injury to poor vision, Dr. Keirstead is certainly someone with the potential to change the world.

Photos shot for the latest issue of Orange Coast Magazine.

Bob the Pilot

I can’t believe I never blogged about this guy back when I photographed him.

He flies those banner ads you see hovering above you at the  beach or county fairs.

He also let me fly his stunt plane.

Tranquil Tea Lounge

Had a meeting with Orange Coast Magazine a couple months ago, and on stifling summer drive back to LA with a broken air conditioner (barefoot, uphill, both ways, in the snow) I received my first assignment with them via email. The issue is out on shelves now and has some great info on OC nightlife if you’re out in that direction.

Stay tuned for more work from Orange Coast!

The brother sister team that own and operate Tranquil Tea Lounge in Fullerton have an awe inspiring selection of specialty teas to choose from. It’s a welcome change of pace from the impersonal caffeine machine that is Starbucks and has delicious salads and sandwiches to boot.

Alfred Eisenstaedt’s Scientists

I always knew about Eisenstaedt’s “The Kiss” and his iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe, but I had never seen his photos of these famous scientists until just now.  They’re amazing.

Carlos Serrao

I was just looking through Esquire’s supplement “The Big Black Book”  which detailis all the things an urbane individual would need to know for upscale, meet your hedge fund manager at his home in the Hamptons, type dinner parties.  But there’s a photo spread at the back of magazine by Carlos Serrao that looks amazing.

Ignore the bottom left image:  This was shot by Barnaby Rope, also in the same issue.

Here’s a video:

His website is definitely a lesson in simplicity and functional flash.

Things I think are awesome: The full screen, zoom, and background color change features, and just how seamless everything runs, including the loading of all the thumbnails at nice viewable sizes.

Jeff Lipsky is an Awesome Dude

We had Jeff Lipsky as a guest speaker in our Entertainment Photo class this evening.
http://jefflipsky.com/
Besides being a great celebrity photographer, he’s an all around nice guy.
He shared his experiences as a photographer, reiterating the common gems that get glossed over far too often here at Art Center.  Reliability, adaptability, hard work, perseverance, and just being someone who’s pleasant to work with.  All common sense, but it feels as if people expect jobs to be handed to them on a silver platter upon graduation.

His comments also left me with the feeling that I’m too rigid while shooting, too tied into the lighting set up that I don’t tune in to my interaction with the subject as much as I should. I think I need to find a happy balance between my existing setup and a Keep It Simple Stupid workflow that makes things a little more accessible.

Also, what better excuse to post Naomi Watts in something that might as well be underwear.

The Benefits of Collaboration

step_cover1A while back I was lucky enough to be introduced to a great graphic designer by the name of  Owen Gee.  We proposed a trade of services and in return for shooting his books, posters, and branding packages, he would give a much needed overhaul to my identity system.  After he graduated he was chosen as one of Step magazines top 25 emerging talents, and of course he couldn’t have any old iPhone photo published next to his name.  Congratulations Owen!
