Media Blackout Week

I have decided to make myself a stronger person.

To start off this “Vision Quest” I have decided to shelter myself from television, facebook, wandering the internet aimlessly, and general time wasting activities for a week.  Like a master cleanse of media.

Instead I’ll be doing the reading I always tell myself I’m going to do.  Limber myself up with morning yoga, and take nighttime runs listening to Journey’s “Only The Young.”

Status update in a week, plus some extra pre-scheduled posts during the holidays.

Also… I think I need to find a jacket like this guy’s.

Nothing like going back to basics.

First off, sorry I haven’t updated in a while.

I’ve been working on putting together a new portfolio and getting all my promotional materials off to their various printers.

Found this on Wired.com.

Photographer Clay Enos (All those great Watchmen images) hangs out in San Francisco with a sheet of white paper and a 50mm.  No lights, no crazy telephoto zooms, no models, just him and the unassuming public.

It’s great to see things like this that make you just want to go out and photograph the world.  Maybe I’ll give it a go one of these weeks.

Switching to WordPress!

Everything is so much easier now.  I lost my ability to log in when I switched hosting companies.

New posts coming soon.

Bear with me as I attempt to customize and repopulate this thing with all the old posts.

Amazon Justice

Now, I’m not a Halo fanatic, but I do enjoy the game and the world it’s set in.  But nothing garnered my attention more than the ad campaign devised by T.A.G. San Francisco.

I order the thing on Amazon and realize a month later that nothing showed up in the mail.  I contact the seller, get a rushed excuse and don’t see anything for another week.  Finally, the helmet shows up but without any of the actual content.

Thank you amazon.com for your swift judgment in my favor for a full refund of the purchase price.  Now I have a trophy of my geekdom and an interesting product shot for the hell of it.

Shoot Details: Because of the large golden reflective surface of the helmet, I had to get a giant 4×8 piece of foam core and cut a hole in it for the lens to pop through.  Even then it was a lot of retouching to get all the lines and seams out of the visor.  Other than that, it was fairly simple, rim light and a softbox, with a background light for separation.

Jealous

I would have to say, shooting anything at CERN would be my dream assignment.
So when I stumbled upon this Strobist post, I pretty much went a particular shade of Hulk green with envy.

Image off of Strobist

If you’re not familiar with his site, David at Strobist creates homebrewed professional lighting setups using simple speedlights and modifiers. Reading his post I realized how valuable those little things are, being so caught up in the world of studio lighting and 1200ws power packs has made me forget that tight spaces can’t deal with large lights. His technique definitely works for its compact and easily adaptable style, but I would love to get in there with a full setup and get some great environmental portraits.

For the Record

I bought a set of Snuggies.
Two facts:
They are comfortable and warm.
Moms love them.

AND

The New York Times has indeed justified my purchase.

You Know, the Guy with the Glasses, Shoots Science.

One of my flaws as a salesman of my particular brand of imaging services is that I’m not memorable enough in quick, infrequent meetings.  Like the everyman or face in a crowd I personally don’t make enough of an impression.

This is one of the things that my fellow classmates commented on in a recent discussion of our strengths and weaknesses as it applies to our photography business brand, and I totally agree. I’m much too quick to make someone else’s life easier, come off as too formal or simply too hard to read even though I might be ecstatic about something on the inside.  As a habit, I don’t like to make waves, which is great until someone needs to remember your face.

So what do I do, I’m not flashy, trendy, silvertongued, exceptionally good looking, or humorous. I need to read a situation first before I’m completely comfortable, understand how people react to certain things.  I listen, really well.

That’s not to say that I think my work is forgettable, or that I’m not personable.  But the trick is to find something that I can use to sell myself without becoming something I am not.
